An Ode to The Humble Back Warmer

Back warmers don’t create heat, they are just simple tubes of warm, cozy material that keep your body heat in and your muscles warm. They are used by contortionists the world over in training and warm ups.

Fun fact: Your muscles are happiest stretching at 1-2 degrees above your normal body temperature. This is particularly important for the small, delicate muscles of the lower back, which are prone to tightness, bruising, cramping and possible injury when engaging in deep backbends (or even little backbends if your back is just getting used to that range of motion).

Hanging on to your glorious body heat extends the amount of time you can spend on bending without lower back pain. It also helps to keep your back warm even if you have to step away for a few minutes.  Normally if you take breaks, your back will get cold, but with a backwarmer on you have more time before the muscles seize up, as they’re wont to do.  If the rest of your body temp has to drop a little, a backwarmer can help the lower back muscles keep cold-and-cranky at bay, staying closer to warm and gooey.

Even if you’re not doing any flexibility training, this can be helpful in terms of keeping your body temperature up during a workout, as much body heat is lost through the abdomen.

A back warmer can be particularly handy for for pole dancers, who typically wear very little clothing in order to grip the pole. Herein you can keep those muscles juicy, and also keep yourself mostly naked. Yay!

Our first run of back warmers sold swiftly IRL, and we’ve finally made a second run available in our online merch tent of wonders!  Step inside and snap one up before they vanish…

Happy Bendings!
